Christmas Celebrations at the Window on America Center in Lutsk!



For many people all around the world, Christmas is one of the most joyous times of the year. It’s a time for families and friends to gather together, and for many Christians it is one of the holiest days of the year. 
And for many Ukrainian people – the Window on America Center visitors - December 25 became a strong tradition to gather at the Center and celebrate the birth of Jesus.
During these days 45 people came to the Center to mark the holiday.

The present audience learned more about the Christmas Holiday in the USA and around the world.  Relaxing instrumental Christmas holiday music was enjoyed with a good company and friendly atmosphere.
The book exhibit “Christmas Day in the USA” was organized at the Center.
 There was presented literature on history and traditions of Christmas celebration in the United States of America. 


The mood was really festive with carols and Christmas songs. : “Christmas is coming”, “White winter”, “Let It Snow”, and others.

The Window on America Center in Lutsk Center: an Important Resource Center for Teaching and Learning!



On December 16 and 19, 2013 the Window on America Center in Lutsk hosted a meeting for the  teachers of English language from local and regional schools.




During the meeting the audience learned about the latest collection of English language learning and teaching resources at the Center.








The focus was made on the resources that help educators in becoming more familiar with modern technologies associated with teaching and learning English language, mainly:

types of learning and teaching resources;

strategies for effective resources development;

 Kindles in teaching and learning English;

guidance on how resources can be effectively used with examples of good practice.

Welcome! The Window on America Center in Lutsk Helps You Really Learn English!


The method of language learning is important. And on December 10, 2013 the presentation of a new way to learn language -"English 123 in the library” – gathered 17 people at the Center who showed great desire to learn about the project and to participate in it.


"English 123 in the library” aimed to gather users with different levels of language skills: from beginner to middle level.


The course consists of four levels of training, which includes dialogue, movies, photo lessons.




The WOA Center staff made an informative presentation on "English 123 in the library” as a powerful method of language learning that is quick to learn and easy to use.


This is a very effective course after completing it the participants will receive a certificate of achievement and good knowledge.

Week of Persons with Disabilities was Held at the WOA Center in Lutsk.

People from many countries worldwide participate in various ways to promote the International Day of Pearsons with Disabilities. This year the Window on America Center in Lutsk organized a paper show "Ability not Disability".
During the period of time from December 02 till December 09, 2013 the exhibit was displayed at the Center and aimed to:



  •  show the skills, abilities, contributions and achievements of people with disability;
  • promote a positive image of people with disability.






The visitors were proposed to watch the documentary about life of people with disabilities in the United States and Ukraine made by Vadim Kastelli. 
During these days the Window on America Center united people (about 35) in acknowledging the contributions, skills and achievements of people with disability


The event worked to support and promote the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities.

The Window on America Center in Lutsk Attracted New Visitors – the Librarians!



On December 3d, 2013 the group of  librarians from Lutsk and Volyn Region gathered at the Window on America Center in Lutsk to talk over the use of modern technologies in the work with readers.


The meeting sparked a lot of ideas and practical advice on how the WOA Center used modern technologies in the work, mainly:

  • Learning English through playing board games,
  • Using the language learning program Trace Effects,
  • audio language courses.







The main part of the meeting was devoted to presentation about the electronic reading and the present audience (9 people ) could improve Kindle reading experience. We covered some of the current and important topics in ways to use Kindles when working with readers.








At the end of the meeting librarians, generating a lively and insightful discussion, came to one conclusion – the WOA Center in Lutsk is absolutely the best place to learn English using modern technologies.

Thanksgiving Day Celebrations at the Window on America Center in Lutsk!



Many Americans think of Thanksgiving as a wonderful time to celebrate getting out of school for a long weekend, and eating a great dinner. The WOA Center in Lutsk visitors also liked that holiday!





During 2 days (November 26-27, 2013) about 30 people gathered at the Center to learn  about the Pilgrims, the Indians, the Mayflower, and the First Thanksgiving.




During the meetings the audience explored the Thanksgiving Day history, the First Thanksgiving and Thanksgiving today.

The best of the WOA Center resources were presented and helped the audience to understand the history of the United States of America, mainly the national holiday – the Thanksgiving Day!

“What Means a Modern Library” Was the Topic of Meeting that Gathered 10 Librarians at the Window on America Center in Lutsk!



On November 18, 2013 librarians from local and regional libraries gathered at the Window on America Center Room to discuss ideas for new services in their libraries.
The 2 hour presentation on the “Modern Services at the WOA Center in Lutsk  introduced the latest technology for the visitors who wanted to get up-to-date information on the United States, its history, government, society, and values to Ukrainian audiences.




The WOA Center Services and modern technologies that provided intense practice of language such as board games, language learning programs, the audio books, audio language courses were presented to the audience.








One of the modern WOA Center services - Kindles in teaching and learning English – were lovely discussed among the librarians. 










“The Window on America Center in Lutsk is a great gift to students, teachers, pupils and other visitors” the librarians said. “And the great potential is realized through technical support, modern technologies and of course the work of librarians.”

Learn The English Language with Rosetta Stone at the Window on America Center in Lutsk!




During November 7-8, 2013 two groups, averaging 16 people per meeting were offered the presentation of Rosetta Stone - one of the biggest brands in language learning in the English speaking world.

The program attracts a variety of adult participants, including pupils, young adults and students.


Persons attending the meetings could have a great chance to try an approach Dynamic Immersion – to use images, text, sound, and video to teach words and grammar by spaced repetition, without translation.

Happy Halloween Meetings For WOA Center Visitors in Lutsk!


The first meeting that took place on October 28, 2013 gathered 12 students together with the English language teacher Svitlana Horbach. 



The students made creative this Halloween with exciting and engaging educational activities: answer questions to create a silly, spooky story, played the most popular Halloween games - pin- the-tail-on-the-donkey and bobbing for apples. 


Besides having fun, students reviewed basic vocabulary, learned about the background of the holiday, its customs and traditions, etc.  and develop creativity.




The second group of 19 students from National University of Food Technology visited the WOA center in Lutsk on October 31, 2013 and turned Halloween into learning holiday.

Halloween Word Searches, puzzles games, crosswords provided rich opportunities to learn about the holiday.

The Window on America Center in Lutsk Offers Board Games and Attracts Young Learners of English to the Center!



On October 30, 2013 the WOA Center took part at the Information Day that was organized at the Volyn Research library.
The event attracted 25 young visitors who enjoyed all manner of board games.


The games themselves have a wide variety of themes. There’s something for everyone.


The recourses presented attracted a wide variety of people who enjoyed old classics like Monopoly, 10 Days in the USA, UNO and motivated people to learn through fun practice.

Use the Kindle - eReaders at the Library!


The WOA Center in Lutsk took part in the Oblast Seminar “Informative Recourses in the Libraries ” that took place on October 29, 2013 at Volyn Oblast Research Library and gathered about 35 librarians.





In the frame of the seminar the Window on America Center coordinator made the presentation “E-Readers at the Library”.
The main emphasis was made on the following topics:
1.      the nature of e-books and why they are important to add to library collections;
2.      the ins and outs of licensing, purchasing, and lending e-books;
3.         how to navigate e-books readers –Kindles;
4.        how to get started using the devices;
5.        how to find books, etc.

The audience was proposed to get information about a vast variety of automated information resources.

The visitors showed big interest in getting information about the electronic reading at the Center.

With great pleasure we presented our work on Amazons Kindle format.

Halloween Is Coming! The Window on America Center in Lutsk Visitors Are Ready to Scare!


On October 27, 2013 the WOA Center visitors came to the Center to mark the holiday.

The WOA room was decorated in the traditional Halloween colours, orange and black.


At the beginning of the meeting the audience (23 people) was proposed to listen to the informative presentations about that holiday so that to be more aware of the background of it, customs and traditions, etc.




We made this Halloween special by carving your own pumpkins with this step-by-step guide.












The second part of the party was devoted to the most popular Halloween traditions - one of the most popular is called pin- the-tail-on-the-donkey and bobbing for apples.



Overall, all the visitors said they enjoyed the party and learned more about that festival.
